On Memorial Day Dan woke up and wanted to go on a hike. I suggested "Buckskin Gulch" the "Worlds longest Slot Canyon that is close by here. I have had an article about it tucked away as a place I wanted to check out. It was too cold to go there today( you have to wade through water at times) so Dan says "Lets go to the Grand Canyon, the North Rim"! It's weird to think we can just go to the Grand Canyon on a whim when people plan a year in advance to go on vacation there.
Well we headed out within minutes and had a great day. We ate lunch at Jacob Lake Lodge. OK, if you go there you have to buy some cookies. All their baked goods are to die for!!! Seriously I want to go work there just to learn how to make all the cookies. They even had German chocolate cookies that were amazing. Peggy would flip out! I asked if they made them there and he said "yup"! My sister and sister-in-law make them with the help of a bunch of elves. They put Mrs. Fields cookies to shame..I am not kidding. I would drive there just to get cookies. When I do I am buying 2 of each kind and I will eat them all myself! They made a lemon sugar cookie that was so yummy too! Dang, I wish I could bake like that. Sharyl we have got to go there next time we need some sugar.
After that yummy experience we headed on to the North Rim. Dan is planning to hike from the South to the North Rim. I am planning to ride a burro down to the bottom and back up then head back to the cabin and read a great book on the porch while he is hiking. We want to rent cabin 306 that looks out over the canyon and the porch is more private. (We picked out the best cabin today) I will do a shorter hike the next day. Wanna go! I need a friend to hang out with while he is doing the Rim to Rim thing. I will have some awesome cookies with me!!
We drove through an area on the way that had been in a fire probably last summer. Well the tree's were cool even though they had been burned. I was so fascinated that I couldn't stop taking pictures of them.
We passed by Colorado City and I am reading the book "Stolen Innocence" by Alissa Wall she is the girl that put Warren Jeff's in Jail ( I can't put it down and plan to read the one Sara read next) so I was so focused on that city today. It's weird to be so close to that situation when we hear about it on the news everyday and here we are passing by their town. I'm looking around seeing where Alissa worked and slept in the desert to stay away from her husband that she did not want to be married to.
OK, I know this is long so I will hurry up. I am sad I did not make it to the graves in Mt. Pleasant or to my dear sweet moms grave today. I really love that ritual that was a part of my growing up. Many great memories of picking Lilac's to take to the cemetery. I love to check out cemetery's and read headstones. weird I know.
Hope you all had a great weekend.
Stumbled on your site...I really like it. Inspiring. :-)
ReplyDeleteI want to come hang out with you and eat cookies, now that's my kind of vacation. :) When are you doing it? Next winter time I want to fly down and see you, that would be fun...of course, that means you need to come visit Dan's bro, and us! I love it that the Grand Canyon is so close, how fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous, I would love to be able to go to the Grand Canyon whenever I want. I'll have to join you some day, especially for the cookies. Yummy! Looks like you guys had a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I've NEVER been tot he Grand Canyon... we need to plan a trip sometime!
ReplyDeleteANd I know what you mean about seeong Colorado City in person... it makes the story very real... I've been watching TV specials (there was a 48 hours on Tuesday night) about polygamy, specifically the FLDS. It is tragic. Part of me wants to believe it happened long ago and far away or that it is embellished by disgruntled former members, etc., but in my gut know it's not... it is happeneing right here, right now, right under our noses... so sad!
That is so awesome! You guys are always doing such fun, adventurous stuff! Beautiful pictures! I too want to come visit! You are like Grandma Joyce.. full of life, energy and FUN things!
