Headboard Project!

While Dan's mom has been ill and in the hospital his dad decided to surprise his wife and fix up her bedroom. Ruth (his mom) had seen a picture in the Sunset magazine of this cute headboard made out of a door! Dan and I looked at DI, RC Willey outlets, and consignment stores to see if we could find something already made that we could redo. We never did so we went to the "Habitat for Humanity" store in Provo that I had heard about that gets all kinds of construction materials donated to them. It's a great place if you need a random piece of moulding, a door knob, all kinds of crap!! Well they had ton's of doors the day we went and so we bought 2- 8 foot tall doors as we needed to make a king size headboard. They were only $15 dollars each!! whoo-hoo!!  Everything is really cheap. I even picked up a couple scrapbook items of all things!!!

Steps on how we did it:
First -Dan cut them off then spaced them for the width of a king size bed.
He also put some firring strips on the back to secure the doors to the wall. Their wasn't 2x4 studs exactly where we needed them to secure the doors and the firing strips took care of that.

Next, we bought a sheet of MDF board to frame up the sides and to fill in the space in the middle.
He also drilled holes for the lights. They were hollow doors so we were able to thread the wires down through the door and then attach plugs that could plug right into the outlets already on each side of the bed. Easy Peasy!!! We found some little  lights that matched her hardware with a pull chain so she doesn't have to reach up far to turn them off in Brushed silver.
The inspiration headboard had cute little red lights.
Next: adding the top moulding and shelf.

I then primed it all before painting the final coats. It took a couple of coats of paint.
Then Dan attached the new lights.
Ta-Da!!! Beautiful headboard just like the magazine!!
I think this is my first project I have ever truly copied from a magazine and actually made it. I usually cut the pictures out and never make it.
We painted her room her favorite Lavender color. It's actually lighter and softer in person.
This is the picture of the inspiration headboard we used. It is for a twin bed so if you need to make a cheap cool headboard it would be way easier to make with just one door. Just go buy any white door without the doorknob hole drilled in it!
We got new carpet for the room also. New carpet always makes such a difference.  Ruth LOVES her new room!! It's my favorite room in their whole house now. I'm so glad Dan did all the cutting and measuring. I just told him what to do(we only had to argue about how to do it a little) :))) then I  did all the painting. He hates to paint, and I find it quite relaxing as I love to see the change a new color makes to a room.

*I couldn't get the stupid white backgroud to get off some of my text! grrr ..
