Well, I have been wanting to get out to Kennecott for years. I was about 10 years old last time I was there and Dan said he went there when he was eight! 50 years ago.
I thought it would be a fun thing to do to fill up the evening instead of sitting at the house playing referee to the boys so I decided we'd finally go to Kennecott. Matt and Rachelle have taken the boys before but they were excited to go again. I got Dan to come with me and we headed up to the big hole in the earth!
On the way there dark clouds started to roll into the valley. Dang! I was hoping it would not come out where we were. Well as soon as we pulled into the parking lot the wind started blowing like crazy. It was like a tornado was upon us. Sand was blowing in our eyes and Crew was freaking out. I didn't like it either. As I was running fast with Landen and Cody into the visitor's center Dan had lifted Crew up to look over the fence and instantly Dan's (favorite) hat blew off and down into the pit area. :( There was not a chance to even try to retrieve it. Joke-ingly Dan asked the security lady if she would go get it for him. She said no. LOL
I felt bad for him as he really loved that hat.
Once safe inside the visitor's center and the wind going nut's outside we started to check it all out. Dan told me he wanted to go back out in the wind! I don't know why he liked being out there but I said sure whatever. As soon as he walked outside the host said he was locking the doors and telling us to exit out the emergency doors in the back if we wanted to leave to be closer to our cars. Then the host announced that he would start the 18 minute movie. I took the boys into the movie hoping Dan would get back in. Well, he never came in and when the movie was over I found him but he said he had been locked out! I felt bad for him but remember he WANTED to go back out to the crazy wind!
Well, I told him to go watch the movie with Crew and I would help Cody with his merit badge questions. I am proud to say we got that all done! Geez I felt like I WAS IN SCHOOL doing that. I was writing down answers the whole time during the movie and going through the displays. IT was fun though as it made me read all the displays more intently. Cody helped of course. Maybe I can get a merit badge too!
Finally we could go outside again but it was still windy and hard to really stand and look at the big hole and everything else there is to see. Plus it was closing so we had to hurry.
Dan and the boys loved it and I enjoyed it but I need to go back again when it's not such a windy day so I can really take it all in.
I still need to take Thaxton, Traven and Jace there so I am sure I will get there before 45 or 50 years go by this time. Hopefully it won't be windy!!!
